The first Plant Medicine Expo & Healthcare Provider Conference was held in Denver, Colorado on September 25th and 26th. We gathered together experts from across the nation to speak on the topic of medical marijuana.

Denver Healthcare Provider Conference Seminars:

  • The Legal Landscape for Medical Marijuana: What Physicians Should Know – Diane Hoffman
    • Expert introduction to the federal law governing medical marijuana (MMJ), the decriminalization of MMJ in 14 states, and the variations of laws in these 14 states with regards to how they affect healthcare professionals. Ms. Hoffman is the Law and Health Program Director at the University of Maryland School of Law.
  • The Truth About Marijuana Addiction – M.L. Mathre
    • Is cannabis addictive? The research and medical proof behind it. Also, how cannabis can assist in addiction therapy with other substance abuse. Ms. Mathre is an RN, MSN, CARN, Navy veteran, and President & Founding Director of Patients Out of Time—the premier educational forum dedicated to the restoration of medical cannabis knowledge.
  • Here's What We Know, Here's What We Don't Know, Where Should it Go?– Dr. Alan Shackleford
    • A brief history of cannabinoids and their effective use for medical and psychological issues. New uses for MMJ will also be discussed as will a call to action to allow testing of medical marijuana on additional disease states. Dr. Shackleford practices at Amarimed in Denver and specializes in behavioral medicine, stress management, and chronic pain.
  • Cannabis in Pain and Palliative Care - Dr. Donald Abrams
    • The effective use of MMJ for patients who are terminally ill or are afflicted by an incurable disease state.  Detailed description of how MMJ alleviates or significantly decreases pain associated with these patient states. Dr. Abrams, a cancer specialist, is director of clinical programs at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion.
  • The Endocannabinoid Roots of Medical Marijuana: Liberating Cannabis From the Drug Abuse Paradigm
    - Dr. Gregory L. Gerdeman, Ph.D.

    • Cannabinoid receptors and the molecules that activate them – the endocannabinoids – function widely throughout the brain and body. How the ubiquity of this endocannabinoid system explains the rationale and breadth of marijuana’s therapeutic potential. Lessons from animal research that fails to describe cannabis as a typical 'drug of abuse.' Dr. Gerdeman is Assistant Professor of Biology at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
  • Bringing MMJ to your Practice – Tim Tipton
    • Expand your practice through MMJ treatment options. A question-and-answer section will be provided at the end to help facilitate open discussion about navigating MMJ business decisions. Mr. Tipton has more than 30 years of experience with MMJ and has helped develop many MMJ dispensaries in Colorado with his court-certified expertise.

    • Unionization is another step in the campaign to bring legitimacy to the MMJ industry and provide support to the MMJ-legalization initiative. Mr. Lind is the president of UFCW5--a California labor union representing retail, agriculture, food processing, and patient-care employees who work with MMJ.

    • Current issues surrounding the impoverished MMJ population in Colorado. Will address the issues of accessibility and affordability for the impoverished, as well as discuss solutions that could help reduce these problems.
